The Central Coast has a beach for every mood, and most of the best are a short drive from Blue Bay. Here is how they compare, and which one suits your day.
Blue Bay: calm, quiet and sheltered
Small and east-facing, Blue Bay is protected by a rock platform and sand spit that keep the water calm and clear. It is the pick for a peaceful swim, a snorkel or a sunrise, and it stays quiet even when the busier towns fill up. This is where Waveshine sits, directly on the sand.
Toowoon Bay: the family favourite
A short walk south, Toowoon Bay is gentle and patrolled in season, with a playground, parkland and a takeaway shop behind the beach. If you are travelling with young children, this is the safe, easy option.
Shelly Beach: surf and a coffee
A little further north, Shelly Beach offers consistent surf, long beach walks, and a golf club and cafe nearby to round out the morning. It is a good middle ground between quiet Blue Bay and the busier surf beaches.
Terrigal and the Skillion: the buzz
Head south to Terrigal for the coast's most social beach, backed by a lively cafe and restaurant strip. Walk up the Skillion, the grassy headland at the southern end, for one of the best coastal views on the Central Coast. This is the spot for a beach day that ends with dinner out.
Avoca Beach: the coastal village
Just beyond Terrigal, Avoca is a charming beach village with reliable surf, a relaxed cafe strip, a historic cinema and bushland trails nearby. It has a slower, local feel and rewards an unhurried afternoon.
Bateau Bay and Soldiers Beach: for surfers and walkers
South of Blue Bay, Bateau Bay pairs soft sand with the clifftop trails of Wyrrabalong National Park, good for beginner surfers and walkers alike. To the north, Soldiers Beach is a patrolled surf beach near the historic Norah Head Lighthouse, with rock pools to explore.
Which beach should you choose?
For calm swimming and quiet, stay close to home at Blue Bay and Toowoon Bay. For a surf, point the car toward Shelly, Avoca or Soldiers. For a buzzy beach day with lunch and a view, Terrigal and the Skillion are hard to beat. The beauty of basing yourself at Blue Bay is that all of them are within easy reach, and you come home each evening to the quietest beach of the lot.
Getting between the beaches
One quiet advantage of Blue Bay is how central it is. Toowoon Bay is a short walk along the sand, Shelly Beach and The Entrance are only a few minutes by car, and Terrigal and Avoca sit around 25 to 30 minutes south. That means you can chase the conditions: a calm morning swim at home, a surf check down the coast, and a sunset drink at Terrigal, all in the same day without a long drive.
A note on safety and the seasons
Only some of these beaches are patrolled, and only in season, so if you are swimming with children it is worth heading to Toowoon Bay or another patrolled beach and staying between the flags. The ocean here is beautiful but can carry rips on the more open surf beaches. From roughly June to October, keep an eye on the horizon from the headlands, as this is prime whale-watching season along the coast.
